How to Clean Your Mattress

September 10, 20243 min read

The past few months many of us spent more time inside than ever. Chances are, that means our homes could probably use some sprucing up. The next time you pull out your vacuum, consider including your mattress

Whether you've had your mattress for several years or several months, it's a good idea to give it some TLC. After all, you do use it every single night!

Wondering where to start? Here are some of our best mattress cleaning tips to help you freshen up.

Vacuum your mattress

Over time your mattress can collect dust and other particles, but a good vacuuming will suck them right up. Take all of the sheets off of your bed (and throw them in the wash!) and fasten the upholstery attachment to your vacuum. Then, simply vacuum the top and all of the sides of your bed. If needed, you can use the crevice tool to fish out stuck particles. Experts recommend doing this once every three months.

Air your mattress out

Almost everything benefits from a dose of fresh air-- mattresses included! Airing your mattress out can help get rid of any odors and generally freshen it up. Weather permitting, prop your mattress up outside for some fresh ventilation. If you don't have the space to do so, you can simply open some windows near your mattress to get a similar effect.

Turn down the thermostat

Turn down the temperature in your bedroom (ideally between 62-68 degrees) at night and switch your bedding to more breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or eucalyptus. This will help prevent odors, the growth of dust mites, and the accumulation of sweat stains, meaning there's less to clean next time.

Get rid of stains and odors

As time goes on, your mattress can accumulate a variety of stains and odors that make it look and smell, well, dirty! For most stains, mix together hydrogen peroxide, a gentle liquid soap and baking soda, and then apply that mixture to the discolored spots on your mattress. Leave it there for about an hour, and then wipe it up with a clean wet cloth.

Refresh your bedding

Don’t forget your linens! As life gets busy, it’s easy to forget to tend to your bedding. But let’s get real: Do your pillows have a musky odor? How old are your sheets? Do they have holes in them? Do you know what that weird stain in the corner is? If you find that you’re not liking the answers to those questions, refresh your bedding! At Sleep First we have a great collection of bedding waiting for you.

With these tricks, you’ll be sleeping better (and cleaner) than ever. If you’re finding that your mattress just isn’t coming clean, or are not getting the best sleep you can, it might be time to reevaluate.
